Alex with his brother’s dog (which could have been the dog Connie was referring to). His name was Royal, and he passed late last year at 16. Alex escorted him at his brother’s wedding in 2019 / Connie Fusella

I wasn’t able to get on tonight for Connie Fusella’s gallery reading on October 3rd as we were not home. I listened later and the first reading - oh my.

My son was 33, his name was Alex. My Dad’s name is Tom.  He passed when Alex was two. They were best buddies.  Alex passed on 3/19/23,  3 1/2 hours away from us at his own home in Austin. He had been with us for 10 days prior de-toxing from alcohol. His Dad had just taken him home on Saturday and it was Sunday when we got word. By the time his roommate found him it had most likely been 15-18 hours. He suffered from anxiety, depression and drug addiction. Apparently,  that night he took something in an effort to not drink and to calm his anxiety. It was ruled accidental overdose (fentanyl, meth and other things). The first question I asked the night we found out, was whether it appeared intentional. I have worried about that, even though I didn’t believe it to be true. Oh, and June 12th is my birthday, and usually every day when I look at my phone, it “happens to be” 6:12.

How I wish I’d been on tonight.
